How I Get Into the Bible and Can’t Wait to Come Back to it.

 

CHOOSE A PLACE:  You do  you.  Find an undistracted place… doesn’t matter where… it could be starbucks or a closet…. The basement or just after you wake up in bed with a cup of coffee.

 

“HEY ALEXA, PLAY SOME PRAISE AND WORSHIP!”:  It’s really important to set an atmosphere in your heart to hear the fullness of God’s word. For me praise music helps me put on a “garment of praise” and to clean my heart of any distracting darkness

 

GEAR UP: Find your favorite kind of pen, your favorite version of the bible or bibles (maybe a parallel version so you can compare). I like my ESV Journal Bible so I have space to take notes. If you are a doodler, highlighter, underliner or circler; make sure you have what you need. I like to use a mechanical pencil so it doesn’t bleed through page.

 

GET ORGANIZED:  Write the date, Book chapter and time. Use a format if it helps perhaps this PDF journal page is helpful:   (link)

 

WHERE TO START:  I SUGGEST A GOSPEL OR A GENERAL NEW TESTAMENT BOOK…. BUT DON’T AVOID THE OLD TESTMENT… SO MUCH THERE TO GLEAN

 

LETS START IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN:  IF YOU WANT… USE AN APP AND LISTEN TO THE SCRIPTURE READ TO YOU.

 

READ THE WHOLE CHAPTER  

John Chapter 1

GENERAL MEANING: 

Jesus is God incarnate: The Word, The Light, The Messiah The Disciples begin to follow John bore witness, Jesus is the Messiah and has Wisdom and revelation Ie… knowing Nathaniel and seeing him in advance of meeting him.

 

SPECIFIC MEANING:  Jesus came to be with us, call us to follow and take away the sin of the world.

 

Command:  Implied: Follow Jesus, He can forgive sin and offer wisdom and revelation

 

Promise:  Sins will be forgiven

 

Principle:  Follow, Believe, Trust and Jesus will reveal his true nature, power and provision

 

Behavior to take on or change:

            Stop just learning about Jesus but start to purposefully ask others to “come and see” what Jesus will reveal to them about who he is and how he can transform their lives.

 

Pray:  Lord Jesus: Thank you for John and his witness to you as the Word, the Light and God incarnate. Thank you for the Baptist who called disciples to repentance and then pointed them to Jesus. Help me to walk in the baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus has given me and to lead others to him so they can receive the same blessing.
